Scarlett's with Selfridges Complexion
From Scarlett Johansson to Helen Mirren, it's a rare celebrity who isn't blessed with - or helped towards - smooth, clear skin. But when it comes to those of us outside the Hollywood A-list, it appears we are rather confused how we can give Mother Nature a helping hand in creating a flawless complexion.
According to research conducted among beauty experts working in Selfridges' four stores, six out of ten women use the wrong type of foundation - such as an oil-based foundation on oily skin.
Seven in ten women don't know their correct skin tone. And six out of ten women buy foundation on their return from holiday when skin is darker than it is during the rest of the year.
So to help make great skin an achievable New Year's wish, the store has developed the Art of Foundation event across all four Selfridges shops, pooling the creative talents and best products from the world’s leading cosmetics companies, from January 8th to 14th 2009.
The event will focus on creating the perfect base using foundations, concealers, powders and mineral products.
Highlights include:
*Dior will be launching new Nude foundation exclusively with expert make-up artists offering advice on creating the perfect complexion, illustrated with couture foundation models dressed in Dior Couture.
*Trish McEvoy will preview The Ball and The Point, two new ways to apply foundation – an innovatively designed round sponge and a tiny handle-less brush for pin-point coverage.
*Guerlain will be offering foundation makeovers at the Oxford Street Beauty Hall - January 12th to 15th - using the new Parure Foundation collection.
*Clarins is inviting customers for a ‘custom-fit’ foundation prescription and a free fortnight's supply of recommended foundation with each beauty purchase.
*Laura Mercier will have one of her make-up artists offering advice at the Oxford Street store - January 10th to 14th - with anyone booking a foundation consultation during the event receiving a mini Deluxe Flawless Face Cream and Crème Brulee Base Souffle with mini pouch bag.
*Bare Minerals will give away a ten-day trial of the perfect shade of its famous mineral foundation, plus a complimentary mini brush - from January 8th to 22nd - to customers.
*Benefit will be offering makeovers.
Kate secret looks
The Titanic star looks better than ever, as she reveals the secret to looking good while promoting her new film, The Reader.Ms Winslet says her shape is all down to at least twenty minutes of Pilates a day, which she does at home with a DVD.
But it's the make-up she's wearing in recently released shots that is guaranteed to make every woman look sexy in seconds – a combination of smoky eyes counter-balanced by glossy nude lips, which are simply achieved with just two products.
Rimmel Colour Mousse Eye Shadow in Black Pearl, £5.49, smudged over the entire lid will bring a sexy glamour to the entire face.
And Bourjois Effect 3D lip gloss in Rose Or Chic from the Les Nudes collection of shades, £5.30 at Boots, will provide a subtler sexiness that balances out the over-stated eye area - for longevity, apply it over Rimmel Volume Booster Lipstick in Glam, £4.99.
Both the eyeshadow and the gloss contains tiny sparkling particles that will light up the whole face – just what you need to get you through the grey days of the New Year.
Cheryl Cole is a Beauty Icon
Singer edges Victoria Beckham out of poll
It's no surprise that Cheryl Cole's outstanding success as the newest member of The X-Factor judging panel hasn't just been limited to popularity polls.Research by Superdrug shows she's an official Beauty Icon of the year, too – the woman who has most influenced the sales of cosmetics to the rest of us throughout the year.
The survey was conducted amongst 2500 women who were asked to select the people most likely to have them picking out a new lipstick, or popping a can of hairspray into their shopping basket, in order to emulate the beacons of beauty they most admire.
But it's not just pretty young things who have made that top ten, with 59-year-old Twiggy at number seven and 51-year-old Fern Britton taking eighth place.
Surprisingly, several famous faces have dropped out of the top ten this year, most notably Kelly Brook and Victoria Beckham who were last year's number two and four respectively.
Fearne Cotton, number five last year, Gemma Atkinson, number seven, Alesha Dixon, number eight, Lily Allen, ninth, and Jordan, tenth, have all also disappeared from the ten favourites.
Here's who those Superdrug customers reckon are this year's most inspirational beauties:

2. Keira Knightley (9%)
3. Kate Winslet (8%)
